Ground Kona Coffee
Before your brew may be enjoyed, your Kona coffee must first be ground. There are actually a number of ways to do this. You can use an old-style mill, or even manually chop, pound, or take a roller to your beans. However, let’s stick with the most common method of obtaining ground Kona coffee at home, at that’s with an electric blade grinder.
Tips on perfecting your Ground Kona Coffee
There are two basic styles of electric blade grinders. One with a simple “on/off” switch where you have to rely on the naked eye to know how fine a grind you are getting. Then there’s one with settings for different methods of brewing, usually labeled “Percolator,” “Auto Drip,” and “Espresso,” and different number settings on how course or fine you’d like your grind within that style of brew, usually marked “4,” “8,” “12,” and “15.” Keep in mind, though, even with a model that has pre-sets, it is still best to keep an eye on the beans and not rely on the numbers to make your perfect ground Kona coffee.
Another fact to keep in mind is to wash your grinder between each use. Especially if you are not grinding the same flavor all of the time. Otherwise, the oils and sediments from your last grind, as they oxidize and so forth, will adversely effect the flavor of your next grind. It does not have to be with soap and water every time, sometimes just a hot water rinse or warm wet cloth, just so as it is enough to remove any trace of oil from the previous grind.
Ways to maintain you Ground Kona Coffee
Keep in mind that you Kona coffee will stay fresh longest if bought as whole beans and ground only right before brewing. Still, we understand the sometimes-existing necessity and convenience of not having to take the time to grind before heading out the door. Just keep in mind that if you do purchase anything pre-ground that it is that much more important to assure your container of choice is completely sealed and airtight, pre-ground Kona coffee is much more susceptible to air and moisture. Also, keep in mind that when you purchase anything pre-ground that you sacrifice the ability to alter the level of how fine the grounds are, so they are best-used for only one style of brew. However you go about obtaining your grinds, you know that the best flavors wait to be unleashed through ground Kona coffee!
