Coffee from Kona Hawaii

What Makes Coffee from Kona so Exceptional?

The Kona District refers to the southwest coast of Hawaii. Coffea arabica and Kona Typica are the particular varieties of coffee beans cultivated in both the north and south Kona districts. The coffee in Kona is of the highest quality found anywhere in the world due to the excellent composition of climate, landscape, and soil conditions.

The climate is temperate year-round with tropical rains so no frost will threaten the coffee crop. The landscape is rocky, which allows natural drainage, and the volcanic soil is rich and dark with low PH and high nitrogen. There are few bugs or diseases that can harm the trees. Also, great care is taken when hand picking the berries.

Is Coffee in Kona better than Coffee in Other Parts of Hawaii?

Coffee that is produced on other Hawaiian islands (Kauai, Molokai, and Maui for example) is grown in less than ideal soil conditions. The soil is clay, therefore drainage is usually poor and irrigation needs aren’t met.

What are the Laws concerning Coffee from Kona?

Laws in Hawaii mandate that “Kona Blends” must state the percentage of Kona coffee, and require that a minimum of 10% Kona be included. However, this is not a federal law, so a “Kona Blend” might only have a very small amount of Kona when outside of Hawaii. You can rest assured that Kona Cloud Estates only sells 100% pure Kona coffee.

What is the Kona Coffee Cultural Festival?

The Kona Coffee Council hosts the Kona Coffee Cultural Festival in the fall every year. This is a celebration of Kona Coffee and the wonderful traditions of the entire region. Included in this celebration are coffee tastings, a Miss Kona Coffee Pageant, a Kona coffee recipe contest, Kona Coffee Council Dinner and Benefit Auction, and more.
